LOBBY RECEPTION COUNTER DESIGN

I was asked to do a lobby counter design with a separate tall table for writing with pigeon holes for forms. This is for office used of course. I am not used to doing this kind of designs but it is always nice to learn new stuffs. The first thing I did was asked me the following questions?
- What is the need for a new counter desk? It is a new office so a new counter would be suitable and the exisiting counter is now small to accommodate the electronic appliances and other stuff plus the addition of users in the Lobby counter.
- Where is it gonna be located? For this counter it is going to be places in the Lobby to receive guest and visitors.
- Who and how many persons are going to use it? There will be 4 persons who will be using this counter.
- What are the things that will place in it? (like fax, computer, phone, time cards, supplies, forms, etc.) For this one, think of all the things you can put in a Lobby reception counter… that is still not enough, think more.. hahahaha.
- What are the tasks that will done in it? Reception, information, communication, dessimination, etc.
- What design requirement should be consider? (like company logo, style, look, material, etc) For this yellow and blue was used because it is the company’s color. As for the style, a more modern feel is needed.
After finding all the necessary information you will be needing, it is now time to apply them and incorporate them in your design. One thing to consider when designing interior stuffs is the use of anthropometrics. But what is Anthropometrics?
Anthropometrics literally means man (anthro) measurements (metric). It is the measurement of the size and proportions of the human body, as well as parameters such as reach and visual range capabilities. Anthropometrics enables us to properly size items, including system interfaces, to the “fit” the user. (from Wikianswers)
Whether you use books as reference or measure actual objects for reference is up to you as long as serve its purpose with comfortable factor on its users. When I was to finished this counter, I oversee the chairs that will be used which is a high chair so I have to redesign the counter to match the height of the chairs that will be used. I also overlooked the locations of the electronic appliances that will be used and the place where this person and that person will be seating for each have different task to do so it is important to where are they going to be placed.
Well, it is always to know first the basic information needed before you finalize your designs or you might do it all over again from scratch if you overlooked some items.
