240px Fresh tilapia ENGLISH OF TILAPIA?Somebody texted me the other night asking what is tilapia in the english language and at first was thinking a lot because there is no word I can associate Tilapia in english.  So I just replied  lets check the net and below is an except of what I found .

I also asked my brother this question and he answered me that in Ohio, when he ate in one of te restaurants there, he said that in the menu the word Tilipia is in there but somewhere in Italy they call their Tilapia as St. Peter’s fish as seen on the google search.  Now I am confuse so I relied on the powerful wikipedia.

Tilapia inhabit a variety of fresh water habitats including shallow streams, ponds, rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Most tilapia are omnivorous with a preference for soft aquatic vegetation and detritus. Historically they have been of major importance in artisanal fishing in Africa and the Levant, and are of increasing importance in aquaculture (see tilapia in aquaculture). Tilapia often become problematic invasive species in new habitats, whether deliberately or accidentally introduced. (See tilapia as exotic species).The common name tilapia is based on the name of the cichlid genus Tilapia, which is itself a latinization of thiape, the Tswana word for “fish.”[1] The genus name and term was first introduced by Scottish zoologist Andrew Smith in 1840.

Tilapia go by many names. The moniker “St. Peter’s fish” comes from the account in the Christian Bible about the apostle Peter catching a fish that carried a shekel coin in its mouth, though the passage does not name the fish.[3] While the name also applies to Zeus faber, a marine fish not found in the area, one tilapia species (Sarotherodon galilaeus galilaeus) is found in the Sea of Galilee where the account took place. This species has been the target of small-scale artisanal fisheries in the area for thousands of years. In some Asian countries including the Philippines, large tilapia go by pla-pla while their smaller brethren are just tilapia. The Hebrew name is amnoon. The Arabic name is mush? (comb) because of its comb-like tail. Tamil speakers use jilaebi

So here is what I think.  I think that it is generally called Tilapia and that it is the widely accepted word because it is gotten from its scientifc name.  St. Peter Fish is used on countrie where christian religion is widely used becuase of its association with the Christian bible.  The Philippines being a Christian country would have used St. Peter’s Fish but they prefer to call it just Tilpia.  Using both as the english term for this fish is both correct for they are both accepted.
