WOOD REALIZATION
A product demo with MATIMCO Incorporated, a company with products mostly of wood for building construction has made me realized a few things. They are as follows:
- There are two types of termites, those with wings and without wings. So all wood buildings must be applied or treated with anti-termite solutions or wood preservatives even above floor level components).
- Termites cannot penetrate the heartwood part of logs that is why woods used on old structures tend to last longer and still intact because most of them are from old trees that produces heart woods not like what we use today which are young trees that produces sap woods.
- One benefit of wood over metal is its heat resistance. On a demo conducted, a 2 x 2 wood and a metal furring are subject to same amount of heat or fire. The metal broke in 6 seconds while wood after 12 minutes is still intact. They have to apply force to the wood for it to break. This is mostly why ceilings with metal frame collapse.
- Some wood preservatives use Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), which have effects on our health that is why these preservatives with CCA are already banned in most countries. Here in the Philippines they said will be banned soon.
- Wood components in your house (here in the philippines) will be only 2% of the total project cost.
