HOW CAN WE SEE OBJECTS 3 MILLION LIGHT YEARS AWAY?

fuckyeahspace:  The Triangulum Galaxy, a member of our local group residing about 3 million light years away.  How do you photograph something that’s 3 million light years away? Why doesn’t it take the light from over there 3 million years to travel to whatever supercamera we have?

ASTRONOMY PHOTOGRAPHER 2009

British photographer Martin Pugh has been named the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2009. Martin’s Horsehead Nebula, which also won the Deep Space category, was taken with a 12.5” diameter Richey-Chrétien telescope and CCD camera mounted in his garden shed in Canberra, Australia. HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE IS ALIVE

The Hubble Space Telescope is alive, refurbished, and delivering fresh images. “This marks a new beginning for Hubble,” said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. “The telescope was given an extreme makeover and now is significantly more powerful than ever, well-equipped to last into the next decade.”
