SOLAR SHADE

Here is a great innovation that all must apply to their surroundings.  This one is truly a sustainable design that could be use for a long time and maybe forever.  This one adapts creatively to the scorching heat brought by Global warming by giving shade and collecting heat for energy use and storage.  This is called Solar Shade by Australian designers Buro North in partnership with Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab which they plan to educates primary school children about collecting energy from the sun while providing shade in playgrounds.

The canopies have solar cells on top and large handles on the base mean that the canopy can be rotated by pupils or teachers to get the most efficient orientation in relation to the sun throughout the day.

LED displays communicate how much energy is being generated and whether the device needs turning around.

As a government funded initiative, the VEIL solar-shade is a future possibility for the integration of solar-energy harvesting technologies into a form that is pragmatic (providing shade & energy), evocative and educational. Current Australian school curriculum utilize information around consumption and energy as an educational device, and we have designed this interactive concept to explore the visual connection between energy collection and consumption.

This promises more adptation of this concept, from sheds in playground to waiting sheds on public streets, to waiting porch on every houses, to gazebos, etc.

SIDE THOUGHTS

  • Love isn’t a fairytale, it isn’t perfect, and it doesn’t always come easy. But it is something that we should hold on to for the rest of our lives, because it’s the only thing that’s worth fighting for.

  • Hero: someone we admire. Someone we look up to. Someone who gives us hope. Not a myth, or an icon, or a legend- someone solid, genuine and real. An ordinary person who does extraordinary things. A hero picks us up when we are down. Believes in us before we believe in ourselves. Inspires us to expand and embrace what’s possible. Helps us realize that we can be heroes, too - Kobi Yamada

  • Devil’s Pool - a small lagoon, enclosed by rocks, on the edge of one of the biggest, most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls. Set on Livingstone Island, at a height of 103 meters, Devil’s Pool is definitely one of the most surreal locations on Earth

  • Enchanted Well or Poco Encantado.  Located in Chapada Diamantina National Park in Brazil.  - This giant sunken pool is 120 feet deep and the water is so transparent the rocks and ancient tree trunks are visible on the bottom. Access to this pond is highly controlled for environmental protection of its rare and delicate ecosystem.

  • I don’t believe in fate or destiny. I believe in various degrees of hatred, paranoia, and abandonment. However much of that gets heaped upon you doesn’t matter - it’s only a matter of how much you can take and what it does to you — Henry Rollins
